It’s the news fans of the game have been waiting for: Blizzard’s Diablo Immortal has finally begun its alpha testing phase. This announcement comes over two years since it was first unveiled at BlizzCon 2018.

With its first announcement in 2018, much to the chagrin of Blizzcon attendees, Blizzard has been hard at work for this next installment in the Diablo series. With the onset of Covid-19 , most games have been hit by delays and setbacks. Players have been eagerly awaiting news on the title. The first technical Alpha test started in Dec 2020 and gave players their first real look at the game. After the alpha test ended, players were worried to be left in another information drought. With the fourth-quarter earnings call for Activision Blizzard, we now have a clarification on the release of Diablo Immortal.

Despite the continued rise of premium releases slowly breaking the stigma, “mobile game” is still a dirty phrase for many, conjuring images of in-game advertisements, garish visuals, and time-gated mechanics that can only be circumvented with your credit card details. Thankfully, Diablo Immortal is not that kind of experience; though there is a monetisation system in place (more on that later), you won’t have to worry about waiting 24 hours before being able to travel to the next dungeon, or coming across a boss who’ll only drop their best loot for VIP members.

Diablo Immortal Early Access confirmed that the game is in the same universe as the main canon. The story of Diablo Immortal is set sometime between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 (and yes, Deckard Cain is still alive here.) The archangel Tyrael shattered the Worldstone hoping that it will cleanse Sanctuary of evil. Instead, the Worldstone’s broken shards brought darkness with it wherever they fell in the world.

These improvements are touching gaming from all angles, from the classic RPG to first-person shooters. But we’re also seeing it in other parts of online gaming, such as casino games, where developers have finally been able to introduce mobile games that are responsive and fun to play, rather than being laggy. According to vegasslotsonline, graphics are impressive (as good as desktop) even on the most intricate modern slots despite the smaller screens of phones and tablets.

In other words, I never felt as though I needed to own the battle pass to experience the best of what Diablo Immortal’s Closed Alpha had to offer, making its existence inoffensive and unobtrusive during play. This, of course, may change over time, but Blizzard surely understands its player base well enough by now to know that locking any high-tier loot behind the battle pass would rightfully invoke the wrath of the demon-slaying community, so here’s hoping it remains an optional upgrade, and just that.

As an MMO-lite, the game has a lot of staple F2P MMO features translated well into Diablo’s design. The core gameplay of fast-paced, visceral combat still exists, but with a live service gameplay loop that people who play Destiny will be familiar with. These come in the form of Rifts and community-driven marketplaces.
